Children, including infants, are generally more susceptible to viruses and germs that cause various kinds of infections. An ear infection, or otitis media, is an infection of the middle ear caused by a virus or bacteria. Ear infections typically follow colds or allergy symptoms like a stuffy nose since these conditions make fluid more likely to collect and get trapped in the ear. Most children will have at least one ear infection by the age of 2 or 3, and children under 3 are more susceptible to ear infections than older kids or adults because their immune systems are still developing and they are, therefore, prone to getting sick more often. The new guidelines set by The American Academy of Pediatrics note that of about 7 to 20 children treated with antibiotics, only 1 child actually benefits from the treatment. By day seven of an ear infection, approximately 75 percent of children will have resolved the symptoms through either placebo or antibiotics. Therefore, the new guidelines recommend an observation option for acute otitis media, deferring antibiotics for 48 to 72 hours and limiting management to symptomatic relief.

How to Spot an Ear Infection

The most telltale sign for babies and toddlers is more fussiness, crying or irritability than usual. The pain builds as the pressure in the ear builds, from a dull ache to a sharp stabbing pain, and is usually worse at night making it difficult for the child to sleep.

Benefits of Homeopathic Measures

Homeopathy is a system of medicine that stimulates self-healing. Remedies used by a homeopath come from natural sources and are prepared to be free of all chemical toxicity. Homeopathic remedies are chosen to match your child’s exact symptoms, so, when correctly given, most parents notice a rapid improvement in their child’s condition. Professional homeopathic treatment can help to strengthen a child’s natural defenses and immunity to fight an ear infection; this can, in turn, sharply decrease the need for antibiotics and can help prevent recurrent bouts of the illness.

All children were carefully diagnosed with a number of screening instruments to verity the diagnosis of ADHD, excluding other diagnoses. The study involved three phases. First the children were treated with a constitutional homeopathic medicine individualized to their case. Only the children who improved by at least 50 percent on an ADHD rating scale were included in the second phase of the study, a crossover trial with a placebo group. Following that crossover phase, the children were then treated again with their homeopathic medicine in an open label phase. Results showed that children did not improve while taking placebo, but continued to improve while taking the homeopathic medicine during the blinded phase of the trial and in the post-crossover phase. The median Conners rating for ADHD symptoms dropped from 19 at the start of treatment to median of 8 within 6 weeks after the crossover phase of the trial. During the blinded trial, the children receiving placebo had a high CGI rating of 12 compared to the homeopathic group with a rating of 9. After all children were returned to their homeopathic medicine, both groups returned to the low symptom level they had achieved before the crossover phase (median of 8). The authors formed a definitive conclusion from this study. The results of this trial point to the effectiveness of homeopathy in the treatment of ADHD. (Published July 27, 2005 online edition of the European Journal of Pediatrics).

The Material Science Laboratory at Penn State, the #1 material science laboratory internationally (rated as such in 2003), led the research effort. In papers published in Material Research Innovations (The Structure of Liquid Water; Novel Insights From Material Science; Potential Relevance to Homeopathy; December 2005) and Homeopathy (July 2007), researches Roy, Bell, Hoover, et al present the vast data on the structure of water and its ability to change and retain structure in the presence of a remedy. These findings strongly suggest that the 19th century chemistry arguments used to denigrate homeopathy are unscientific and irrelevant. These authors establish that it is the structure of water that dictates its properties. Changes in the structure of water change the information content in water.

It tells the neurologists that they must be alert for an increase in a brain disorder called Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS), which could be triggered by the vaccine. GBS attacks the lining of the nerves, causing paralysis and inability to breathe, and can be fatal.

The letter, sent to about 600 neurologists on July 29, is the first sign that there is concern at the highest levels that the vaccine itself could cause serious complications.” Read more here….

In 1976 the swine flu vaccine caused more harm than the swine flu virus itself. One person died from the swine flu itself, 25 people died from adverse reactions to the vaccine, while several hundreds of people were crippled by the Gulian Barre Syndrome. Will history repeat itself?

In the case of swine flu 50-30% of population has extremely mild symptoms or non at all when infected with the H1N1 flu virus. Yes, there is 1% of deaths from swine flu, on the other hand, there are 180,000 deaths each year as a result of a medical error, the equivalent of three jumbo-jet crashes every 2 days.

According to the report of the American Institute of Homeopathy in 1921, the death rate of the 24,000 flu cases under conventional medical care was 28.2%, while the death rate of the 26,000 flu cases under homeopathic care was 1.05%.

The Homeopathic Medical Society of the District of Columbia reported fifteen hundred cases of flu with only fifteen deaths. In Ohio’s National Homeopathic Hospital, the recovery rate from the flu was 100%. Dr. T. A.
The term ” Body Burden ” refers to the total amount of toxic chemicals that are present in the human body. We may inhale the toxins, swallow them in contaminated food or water, or absorb them through skin. In a study led by Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, in collaboration with the Environmental Working Group and Commonwealth, researchers at two major laboratories found an average of 91 industrial compounds, pollutants, and other chemicals in the blood and urine of nine volunteers, with a total of 167 chemicals, pollutants, and pesticides found in the group. The study results were published in Public Health Reports (Thornton, et al. 2002).

The study volunteers did not work with chemicals and lead a healthy lifestyle.

Scientists have not studied the health risks of exposures to complex chemical mixtures, such as those found in this study. For two-thirds of the chemicals found, many of which are banned, researchers have partially studied the extent to which these chemicals can harm human health. They have found that these 112 compounds can threaten nearly every organ in the body at every stage of life.
In total, the nine subjects carried:

76 chemicals linked to cancer in humans or animals (average of 53),

94 chemicals that are toxic to the brain and nervous system (average of 62),

86 chemicals that interfere with the hormone system (average of 58),

79 chemicals associated with birth defects or abnormal development (average of 55),

77 chemicals toxic to the reproductive system (average of 55), and

77 chemicals toxic to the immune system (average of 53).

Toxic effects do not require high doses. It is not until these chemicals are removed completely that we can regain normal bodily function for optimal health. People today carry within their bodies a ´chemical cocktail´ made up of industrial chemicals, pesticides, food additives, heavy metals, and the residue of conventional pharmaceuticals, alcohol, tobacco and caffeine.

Local resources for healthy foods:

I have been enjoying the farmer’s markets for the last 10 years. It is addictive. The produce tastes so different from the one you buy in the stores. It is fresh and keeps longer in the fridge. The majority of fruits and vegetables have been picked the same morning. The prices for organic produce are lower than in the stores. There is more variety of locally grown foods. Even if you do not buy organic, you still get lower amount of pesticides and toxins on your foods because they are local. You see who grows you food and you eat only what is in season.

Information about local Farmer’s Markets: www.localharvest.org

If going to a farmer’s market is not convenient for you, try the Eating With the Seasons produce coop. They have all organic fruits and vegetables and almost everything is grown locally. The ordering system is simple and the staff is friendly. There are lots of pick up points all over the peninsula. You can also order eggs and meat items. Their produce tastes good and is always beautiful and in good condition. www.eatwiththeseasons.com

Want to get locally produced organic free range meat, eggs and raw milk?

The Peninsula Weston Price Foundation chapter has a few pick-up locations for raw milk, local organic free range eggs and meat, many bulk order sources, monthly potlucks, etc.

Here is a link to their website:
http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/TraditionalFoods/Here is the link the South Bay Weston Price Chapter:

The Weston Price Foundation provides an amazing amount of information about the food and diet. Visit their website: www.westonaprice.org

You can now buy locally produced organic eggs at the food markets in San Mateo and Belmont. On Saturdays San Mateo market has locally produced grass fed organic meat stand (beef, chicken, and lamb) —the meat tastes completely different. My kids love this meat and you can tell the difference.

I am often asked about what makes a good diet. First of all, there is no one size fits all. Homeopathy is about individualizing. It is my conviction that diets should be individualized for all of us as well. We are all different and all of us need individual dietary adjustments.

However, I do believe in a few general principles that work to benefit everybody:

1. Eat organically grown food

2. Eat locally grown food

3. Eat seasonal fruits and vegetables

4. Eat them fresh.

5. Balance the cooked and raw food (eat more raw food in summer and more cooked food in winter).

In my practice, about 40% of my adult clients come to me with some degree of insomnia, and another 60% do not sleep enough because of their job or family demands. Our lives are so erratic that we do not even have time for such a basic thing as sleep. As we continue with our over-stimulated life-style, more and more people start suffering from trouble falling asleep or waking up in the middle of the night and not being able to fall back to sleep.

The medical definition of insomnia is trouble falling or staying asleep. You have chronic insomnia if you sleep poorly for at least 3 days out of a week for at least a month.

We often have problems with our sleep because of stress, use of stimulants and alcohol, side effects of medical drugs, keeping erratic hours, depression, and hormonal changes such as menopause, pregnancy, and postpartum adjustment. Many mothers start experiencing insomnia after they wean their babies whom they used to breastfeed through the night.

Lifestyle changes

Most people need at least 7-and-a-half sleep hours per night. If you find that you have problem sleeping, you should make sleep a priority in your life. Schedule the time for sleep and keep this schedule fixed no matter what. You must to go to sleep before 11 PM because our systems–particularly the adrenals–do a majority of recharging and recovering between 11 PM and 1 AM. The gallbladder dumps toxins at the same time. If you are awake between 11 PM and 1 AM, the toxins go back into your liver, which then dumps them back into your system and disrupts your health.

Dietary Modifications

Insomnia sufferers should avoid caffeine completely, including coffee and black tea. Some people are extremely sensitive to caffeine and for them even a morning cup of tea or coffee may cause insomnia later that night. Try to avoid alcoholic beverages as well. Although alcohol makes you drowsy, you will wake up later and will not be able to return to sleep.

Avoid sugar snacks before bed. They will raise your blood sugar and you will have difficulty falling asleep, and later on during the night, as your blood sugar suddenly drops, you will wake up.

Professional Homeopathic Care for Insomnia

If these simple measures do not help you sleep better, consider professional homeopathic care to overcome insomnia. Homeopathy approaches insomnia as just a part of a puzzle of what is going wrong with your body. For a Homeopath, insomnia is just an outward manifestation of an imbalance in your organism that can be brought back into balance by a constitutional homeopathic remedy.

This remedy is found by taking into account all of your symptoms — including the insomnia symptoms as well as the emotional and physical symptoms you are experiencing. The constitutional homeopathic remedy heals you from the inside out and you will gradually start feeling better and sleeping more soundly.

Herbs for Insomnia

If your insomnia problem is mild (less than 3 nights a week), you can try to use herbs and homeopathic remedies to help you sleep better. Your first step should be to implement the lifestyle and dietary changes.

In my practice, I use the following herbs as a temporary sleeping aid for the first couple of months, while homeopathic remedies are working on healing from the inside out:

Passiflora Incarnata (Passionflower) — use for insomnia that is due to mental worry or overwork. Take 30 drops before going to bed. If you experience anxiety during the day, you may take 30 drops three times a day.

Escholtzschia Californica (Callifornia Poppy) — this herb is useful if you have difficulty falling asleep or interrupted sleep. Take 50 drops when you cannot get to sleep. You can use up to 150 drops per night.

Homeopathic Remedies for Insomnia

Those remedies will help you sleep better occasionally. If you find that you suffer from chronic insomnia, you should see a professional Homeopath.

Coffea — this remedy helps people who are especially susceptible to the stimulating action of coffee and tea. They may be nervous, restless, and sleepless due to mental activity or excitement. They may sleep only until 3 PM and after that they can only doze.

Nux Vomica — is useful when you cannot sleep because you are thinking about all those things you have to do and, furthermore, you worry that, because you cannot sleep, you will not be able to do all those things. People who benefit from Nux Vomica are often irritable and impatient. They are light sleepers and are sensitive to noise at night and during the day. They often wake up at 3 AM or 4 AM and cannot fall asleep until the morning. The insomnia may be caused by the abuse of sleeping pills, alcohol, or drugs.

Ignatia — this remedy helps insomnia that is due to grief or a recent loss of a loved one. Those who benefit from Ignatia would be sighing and yawning a lot. They may cry frequently or not be able to cry at all.

Cocculus Indica — this remedy is beneficial for those who to keep long hours caring for a sick person or a child. They feel tired but cannot fall asleep. They may also have vertigo with the insomnia.

If you cannot overcome insomnia on your own, professional homeopathic care will remove the causes for insomnia by restoring balance in the body, which will then help to regulate your sleeping patterns.
